FEATURE #67 – Building Communities and the New Grad Experience with Dr Anthony Yammine and Dr Yasmin Samiee

Dental Head Start has always been about helping dental students become great dentists, and over the years, we’ve interviewed dozens of successful dentists to hear their journeys and tips for younger dentists. However, with the end of the year looming up and grad season upon us, I thought it would be interesting to turn things around a little, and actually hear things from a new grad’s perspective. And I couldn’t think of anyone better to chat with than Anthony and Yasmin.

Anthony and Yasmin are finishing their first year out as dentists, but even from the get go as wide-eyed dental students, they were doing incredible things for the community. In their final year of dental school, they were the President and Secretary of the Sydney University Dental Association (SUDA) and are both now now continuing to engage with the industry through their roles in ADA NSW Recent Graduate and Advocacy committees.

This was such an insightful conversation hearing Anthony and Yasmin’s fresh perspective on their job hunting process especially as a couple, different mentorship styles and finding the right balance between having confidence as a new graduate dentist, but also understanding their limitations. This is a heart-warming episode full of words of encouragement that I think one that our student listeners in particular will really enjoy!

TIP #67 – Job Hunting During COVID-19 with Dr Jeff Kho

Needless to say, COVID-19 has shaken the world and the dental industry is by no means exempt. So how has this affected the experience of new grads and their job hunting prospects?

Dr Jeff Kho shares his thoughts on the matter – and I’m pleased to let you know, it’s not all doom and gloom! In this episode, we talk about how to begin our job search journey, the pros and cons of old and new books, and how to toss up between multiple great offers.

TIP #64 – How to Be the Ideal Candidate with Dr Jeff Kho

So you’ve found a practice you love, a mentor you admire and an opportunity that you just don’t want to miss out on. So then how do you go about landing that position? What can you do to make sure that you’re The One?

This is Part 1 of a three part grad series I did with Dr Jeff Kho where we talk about all things surrounding graduation and job hunting, making the most of our final year and how to be the ideal candidate – so keep an eye out for Part 2 and 3. David also did a much longer feature interview with Dr Jeff early in the year where we hear his story and his experience training dental graduates and founding Australian Hands On Courses (AHC).

In this episode Dr Jeff shares his golden tips on making a stellar first impression, being ‘the purple cow’ and the art of persistence. We talk about the importance of not just communicating but properly connecting with people, and how we can get better at it in a world where at times, we can be so disconnected.

TIP#18: Pre-Restorative Alignment with Dr Bharat Agrawal – What I Wish I Knew

Cost can be a major consideration in Dentistry. However ensuring that are we not only considering the financial costs to our patients, but also the biological costs?

This week on the podcast we are chatting again with Dr Bharat Agrawal and we are discussing a topic that he is extremely passionate about – using pre-restorative alignment to achieve conservative aesthetic outcomes. This episode will take you from only seeing ortho only as something to fix the bite, or for crowded to teeth, to starting to see its applications and benefits in almost all of your restorative patients.

Bharat fills us in on the paradigm shift from being purely a cosmetic dentist to a conservative aesthetic dentist with the patients best interest in mind. He shares with us one of his favourite tools to achieve this through orthodontics, as well some tips to help us better communicate this to our patients.

TIP#15: The SAC Protocol for Clear Aligners with Dr John Hagiliassis

Traffic lights, such a simple concept, green for go, red to stop. Have you ever considered your cases in a similar way?

The AORTA SAC assessment protocol is an excellent way to assess your aligner cases and ensure you’re practicing within your scope of practice.

Originally made for assessment of implant cases, John and the AORTA team have modified it for application to aligners and in this podcast he explains the concept and the important points to consider

Prime Head Start!

Dental Head Start is proud to announce its official partnership with Australian dental business Consultancy, Prime Practice, in kicking off a brand-new segment on the podcast called “Prime Head Start”.

Together with the subject matter experts and trainers at Prime Practice, Prime Head Start is a three to five minute segment that will deliver ‘bite-sized’ anecdotes to its listeners on a wide array of topics that all dental professionals should be aware of – key critical soft skills that were never really focused on in dental schools.

Increase Productivity Without Speeding Up!

For me, in the first year I found the biggest increase to my production had nothing to do with me increasing speed.

It was simply trying to group procedures together.

Imagine you are doing a few fillings in a row on different patients. For each patient you greet them, briefly chat, discuss what you’re doing, give LA, place rubber dam, do the filling, check the bite and finally dismiss the patient.
