The Interceptive Orthodontics Lifesaver

Keen to give your paediatric patients the best chance at a straight and healthy smile? Its hard to know when and what to refer, what to monitor, and what you can do yourself. I was lucky enough to get to know Dr Mohammed Almuzian in my studies at Sydney Uni, and continue to learn from him through the BOSS course.

Dr Almuzian is a specialist orthodontist with a passion for teaching in the orthodontic field. He has an evidence based approach and aspires to ensure the best in patient care and treatment options are offered by all dental professionals. To make this easier for the general dental practitioner, Dr Almuzian has put together a straight forward program, where you simply answer some questions and are given an interceptive orthodontics treatment plan. Continue below for some more information on the program from Dr Almuzian:

Orthodontist in your pocket – Dr Mohammed Almuzian

We all learn orthodontics as part of our training and interceptive orthodontics forms a part of the general dentists armamentarium. But when the patient is sat on the chair between the ages of 7 and 11 years how can we quickly analyse all the factors involved in making a decision whether to commence interceptive orthodontic treatment, refer to an orthodontist or to watch and wait?

Waiting and missing a window of opportunity can be detrimental to the patient’s treatment outcome and likewise the frustration of a patient (and parent’s) wasted visit to an orthodontist when referred too early are both situations you, as a GDP want to avoid.

The answer is AVIOS (Almuzian Virtual Interceptive Orthodontic System) an app which is designed for the GDP to enter anonymised data referring to the patient and will result in recommendations to the GDP as to whether to monitor, refer or undertake interceptive treatment.

AVIOS is currently available through the following link:

Disclaimer: this app cannot replace a real, live, trained orthodontist, it will merely guide you towards one when needed!

Give it a try and let us know what you think!
