Welcome to What I Wish I Knew by Dental Head Start. This is a podcast where we learn from people that have been there, made the mistakes, learnt the lessons and have developed into the accomplished dental professionals they are today.

It’s your weekly mentoring session.

Often with paediatric patients we only get one shot.

A paediatric emergency appointment can be stressful for everyone involved. Mum and dad are worried, the child is likely nervous or potentially in pain and it’s likely that you have gained some grey hairs thinking about how this might end up.

Treating kids can be unpredictable, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Dr Tim Keys is on the podcast today to show us how we can take back control of the paediatric emergency appointment to enable us to best help the child, not only with the short term issue, but setting them up for a life of dental confidence.

Key Tips to Takeaway for Tomorrow:

  • 3:15 – Examine the patient as a whole, not just the problem
  • 4:40 – Always take X-rays on kids – wouldn’t do a filling without an x-ray on an adult, why not kids? Also a great test of patient compliance
  • 6:30 – Tips for preparing and communicating with parents
  • 9:10 – Talking about pain – Parents vs. Patient
  • 10:40 – Dr Tim’s spiel to prepare kids for an extraction – some great, fun ideas!
  • 12:25 – Sequencing paediatric treatment plans – start easy and always finish each visit on something achievable.
